The scheduled conferences are designed to complement clinical training. The
conferences provide a blend of core curriculum, new specialty information and
discussion of specific patient problems. Most
of the conferences are also attended by the full-time and volunteer faculty
members, thus providing another forum for exchange with residents.
Meals are served during noon conferences.
Core conferences are based on a written curriculum of over 200 hours, scheduled
primarily on Tuesday afternoons and the noon conferences on Tuesdays and
Fridays. Core medical topics are repeated on a two-year cycle with
required attendance for first-year and second-year residents, while practice
management topics are required for third-year residents. We evaluate these
topics continually for relevance and quality, so that appropriate revisions may
be made.
Grand Rounds are given by the residents
and held
in the FHC Conference Room. General
subject areas rotate among Behavioral Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics,
Surgery, OB/GYN and Geriatrics. Each
resident is responsible for one grand rounds presentation each year.
These conferences are held in either Hillcrest (Pace
building, 5th floor) or Providence (Cafeteria) and are open to the general
medical community. Some of these
conferences cover part of the core curriculum for residents, and are
required for 1st and 2nd year residents.
Others include talks by visiting professors and conferences of particular interest to all physicians. A regular example is pediatric
grand rounds given by visiting physicians from Cook Children's hospital.
The chief residents lead a resident administrative meeting

for further discussion.
Monthly lectures given by our local
infectious disease specialists on various aspects of ID.

They are held on selected weekday evenings, usually early in the year.

certified.

faculty, and one of our local infectious disease specialists to help guide
residents in continuity management of their patients with HIV.
