The Family Practice Center includes the
Family Health Center, the Madison Cooper Outpatient Clinic, faculty offices,
and other components of the McLennan County Medical Education and Research
Foundation. In 1997 a state-of-the-art electronic medical records system
(EpicCare) was implemented in the FHC. Access to EpicCare has been
extended to remote sites through the use of wireless network technology and
personally assigned notebook computers for all residents and faculty.
Resources in the center include psychological services, pharmacy, laboratory,
x-ray and ultrasound suites, social services, nutritionist, patient education
areas, special procedure rooms and an elaborate array of computer resources.
The Center also houses the M. Brian Aynesworth, Jr., M.D. Memorial Library, with
collections of textbooks, current periodicals, a CD-ROM library and audiovisual
materials and equipment. Medline and other medical information search
capabilities are available.
Family physician attendings are present at all times in the Center, and
specialty faculty are readily available. Specialty clinics conducted in
the Center include dermatology, neurology, cardiology, rheumatology, complicated
obstetrics, colposcopy and gynecology. Radiology capabilities include
chest, abdomen and skeletal x-rays, plus abdominal, pelvic and vascular ultrasonography.
Laboratory services are comprehensive.
TEAMS
The functional unit in the Family
Health Center is the team. Each of the teams includes residents at all
levels, a full-time attending physician, nursing personnel, a cashier and a
receptionist. The team is responsible for organizing complete coverage of
outpatient care for its panel of patients. Each team has a designated are
in the Center, resident office, nursing station, and clerical office. In
addition, every team area is networked to the medical data management systems of
the entire Family Health Center and both hospitals.

Why
did I choose Waco? “I chose Waco for residency
because everyone I met during my interview looked happy and satisfied.
I could not find even a single bad point about the program. So far, I
have not regretted even a single moment spent here even though I was
away from my husband initially. A rremarkable
attribute is the excellent relationships between residents. I’ve
rarely seen another group this tight. Waco does feel like a home away
from home. This residency program made me feel very secure and
protected from day one, whether it was teaching me the basics of
medicine or taking care of me when I was pregnant. Here you get to
chose what you want to pursue and learn, whether it is
OB, colonoscopy or international medicine."
