HOSPITAL SERVICES
On the inpatient rotations,
instruction is provided by full-time faculty, volunteer faculty and upper level
residents, primarily in the format of teaching rounds. The Family
Medicine
Residency Program operates its own inpatient services in adult medicine,
pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, and a
comprehensive family medicine service as Providence Health Center.
Residents gain experience in the medical and surgical specialties by
rotating on the services of private physicians in Waco who serve as voluntary
attendings.
The purpose of all the
rotations is to allow the residents to acquire knowledge and skills pertinent to
common diseases in each discipline. Each
resident provides direct care, with supervision, for patients with problems in
the domain of family medicine and may easily obtain consultations as needed.
Instructions in procedural skills are provided on all services, including
minor surgery, major surgical assistance, newborn resuscitation, standard
medical diagnostic procedures, management of labor and delivery and experience
with Caesarean sections.
Weekday admissions are
managed by residents assigned to their respective services.
Nighttime and weekend admissions are handled by an on-call team
consisting of a first-year resident paired with a third-year resident, or by a
second-year resident taking independent call.
These patients are managed overnight by the on-call resident(s) and then
presented the next day at morning report, at which time the appropriate service
or the patient's assigned resident assumes responsibility for the patient's
care. Attending supervision is
available 24-hours a day.
In
this program, residents function as the primary physicians for family
medicine
patients, with faculty and consultants readily available to assist.
