Resident Salary and Benefits

"I came to Waco because I found the training program to be the most comprehensive of all the programs at which I interviewed. As an unopposed program, I get the benefit of taking care of a wide variety of conditions without having to defer to specialist training programs. At the same time, because of the friendliness of the medical environment here, I am not intimidated to work one-on-one with the many consultants available to use here.
In addition I have grown to love the city of Waco, which was originally not an appeal to me about the program. But the great parks, Lake Waco, the huge variety of restaurants and activities, and the strong intercultural focus, especially among our patient populations, has made living here a very enjoyable experience. Since I've been in Waco I've found that my initial hang-ups about being in a small town have melted away. What I like best about doing my residency here is the other residents and faculty. We are truly a team, and have faculty who really advocate for us." Adam Flowers, Class of 2008, Chief Resident

"I chose Waco FM residency because it was by far the best program that I had interviewed. The residents were great, friendly, and very knowledgeable.
I think it is the best place for rural FM training."

Expanded Financial Benefits
Beginning July 2002 our program began to cover 50% of the cost for dependent health insurance for resident families with the remainder being covered tax-free by the resident under our FHC Cafeteria Benefit plan. Secondly, a comparison of benefit packages among programs in Texas shows that our first year salary of $48,539 is amongst the very highest in the state. Our goal has always been to provide a competitive benefit package that does not become a major factor in the decision making process for applicants to our program, so that rank order decisions are based on factors which are ultimately much more important, such as the educational quality of the program. In regard to educational quality we believe that there is little argument that our program is one of the best.
Other Benefits:
- 403B Retirement Plan (Contributions are pre-tax)
- Cafeteria Plan (Covers resident's portion of dependent health and dental insurance and up to $3000/yr additionally into a pre-tax account for qualifying medical expenses and up to $5000/yr for dependent child care)
- Laundry Service for lab coats
- $400.00 Salary advance per year
- Additional Advances for USMLE, Licensure Fees, Jurisprudence, and Board Exams
- Discounted Movie Tickets ($5.00 each)
- Prescription Medications (10% co-payment or $5 for generic Rx, 10% co-payment or $15 for name brand)
Vacation:
First year residents have 10 weekdays for vacation. Second and third year residents are given 15 weekdays for vacation.
C.M.E. Conferences:
All residents are encouraged to attend educational meetings. Time off for meetings will be limited to five (5) weekdays per year for 2nd and 3rd year residents and two (2) weekdays for 1st year residents. Second and third year residents will be allowed a maximum of $1000.00 per year to attend educational meetings, 1st year residents - $500.00.
Sick Leave/ Unscheduled Absences:
Each resident is allowed ten (10) days of sick leave per year, six of which may be carried over into the next year. (The American Board of Family Medicine limits total absences from the program to 30 days per year.)
Medical Care:
The clinic will accept whatever insurance pays as total payment for medically necessary care provided to residents and their family members at the Family Health Center.
FHC Pharmacy Medicines:
Prescriptions for employees and their dependents that have FHC insurance will have a mandatory co-pay of the higher of $5.00 or 10% of a generic drug prescription’s regular charge. The related co-pay for brand name drugs will be the higher of $15.00 or 10% of the prescription’s regular charge.
Payments may be made through payroll deductions, using requisitions to be signed at the time the prescription is presented to our pharmacy. The pharmacy also offers a limited number of over-the-counter drugs at Center cost.
Meals While On-Call:
While on ER and OB call and when in-house due to service call, meals are provided free of charge.
Meals for Noon Conferences:
Meals are provided free of charge at each noon conference.
Moonlighting:
Moonlighting opportunities within the institution are readily available after hours in the Family Health Center beginning as early as November of the PGY1 year with faculty approval. Other moonlighting opportunities in Waco and surrounding communities are available to residents during their second and third years of training. (Note that continued availability of this benefit will depend upon new duty hours rules expected to go into effect 7/1/2011)
Clinical Group:
Over the past few years we have developed an affiliated group of clinical family physicians (distinct from our residents and faculty) that help us to serve our community. These physicians help us to control patient volume for residents in the Family Health Center and also on the hospital teaching services at an optimal level for resident education. This group now consists of 18 family physicians and 13 nurse practitioners and physician assistants. 12 of these are our graduates that have chosen to stay and practice with us, continuing to serve our patients. They provide some care at our main site but for the most part are based in our outlying sites. These include South 18th Street Community Clinic, McGregor, Bellmead Clinic, West Waco Community Clinic, Elm Avenue, and Myers Center for the Homeless. We also have 2 clinics in schools to provide better access to those neighborhoods. This is a very innovative project that allows us to continue to provide high-quality care for increasing numbers of our underserved population without overburdening the educational program.
